Competition calls out for young foodies

Some of the best young chefs in the country may soon be heading for central London hotels as Young British Foodies (YBF) have opened a competition to find the next big chef.

Young cooks have the chance to not only be crowed the best of the chefs by a panel of expert judges but they can also walk away with a £1,000 prize.

There are seven categories that kids can try to impress the all-star judges in, with awards being handed out for The Rising Star of Mixology, The Mobile Mover and Shaker, Best Food Experience Artist, New Best Alchemist of the Oven, Charcuterie Personality, Coffee King or Queen and Most Irreverent Young Chef.

“Whether you are a terrific butcher or charcutier, you roast your own coffee beans, infuse your own spirits or smoke your own salmon you’re part of a movement shaking-up the food and drink world and The YBF’s are looking to unearth your culinary talent and celebrate it in an awards ceremony in March 2012,” explained organisers.

The competition is free for all budding chefs to enter, with the deadline being early February before lucky chosen candidates head to top hotels in London.

YBF was founded by baker and cake maker to the stars Lily Jones, the woman behind Lily Vanilli, and Amy Thorne the managing director of Taste, a leading communications company.

“We at the YBFs believe that attitudes in Britain have changed,” enthused the group. “There is a new generation, a movement, making food and drink the new art, the new passion.”

The judging panels consist of some of the best in the business, such as mixology experts Tony Conigliaro, Nick Strangeway and James Chase, as well as chocolatier Petra Barran, coffee king Gwilym Davies and star baker Daniel Stevens, among many others.
