How do you get in the mood for Christmas? Do you head to the shops to look for the perfect gifts and search for the best bargains? Or maybe you prefer to go on a baking spree, making cakes, cookies and other delicious holiday treats to share with loved ones.
You might also think that the best way to get into the holiday spirit is simply spending time with friends and family, maybe enjoying a glass or two of mulled wine and listening to your favourite seasonal songs.
For many people, December festivities would not be complete without sitting down to enjoy classic Christmas entertainment, such as the Nutcracker ballet, and anyone staying at luxury London hotels in December this year will have the chance to see this popular performance in person.
An annual tradition in the capital, this year’s Nutcracker will be performed by the English National Opera at the London Coliseum. The venue itself is a stunning structure that opened in 1904. Located near to London hotspots including Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery and Leicester Square, the Coliseum can be easily distinguished with its illuminated rotating glove on its roof, while its gorgeous facade and ornate interior with seating for more than 2,000 people make this a truly magnificent London landmark.
If you’re unfamiliar with the story of the Nutcracker, it follows the adventures of a young girl named Clara as she explores a magical land on Christmas Eve, accompanied by her favourite nutcracker doll – who has come to life.
Together, the two defeat the Mouse King and rescue gingerbread soldiers, before travelling to the Land of the Sweets to visit the Sugar Plum Fairy. With uplifting music by Pyotry Ilyich Tchaikovsky, spectacular scenery and beautiful costumes, this is a feel-good night out that will entertain all members of the family.
The show opens on December 12th and continues to January 5th. There are two performances most days, a 2:30pm matinee and a 7:30pm evening showing, and throughout the ballet’s run, there will be a variety of other events, such as backstage tours, workshops and rehearsal viewings.
