This year's May bank holiday falls on the 6th and hundreds of Britons are sure to make the most of the long weekend by enjoying a short getaway. Those booking themselves into luxury hotels in London will be spoilt for choice as to how to spend this surplus of free time, as there are no end of remarkable events taking place to mark the occasion.
Connoisseurs of the country's finest lagers, stouts and pale ales staying in the capital should find the call easy to make, though, as 2013 sees the debut of a brand new beer festival. London's Brewing will be held at the London Fields Brewery in Hackney this Saturday and Sunday (May 4th and May 5th) and promises to "unite local beer makers with beer lovers".
Britain's brewing industry has boomed over the last decade, with the country's best artisanal real ales in particular having built up a new audience and earned an esteemed place in our gastronomic culture. In just a few years, craft brewing in particular has boomed and London alone now boasts an incredibly vibrant scene with dozens of young, talented microbreweries vying to make an impact with their unique draughts.
In total, London's Brewing will showcase the fruits of over 40 breweries' labour. These range from historic producers like The Old Brewery, Greenwich to recently-established pioneers like The Kernel.
A staggering figure of over 100 beers will be available for tasting and ale enthusiasts can choose from both classic bitters, stouts and porters alongside more experimental, artisanal brews.
The festival promises to be upbeat and fun, with live music and DJs throughout the weekend. There'll also be a selection of food stalls for visitors to snack from, with local producers selling high-quality, gourmet street food.
Tickets start from £5 for general admission, but there are several other tickets to choose from that cover both admission and a selection of beverages. Serious festival-goers should consider the 'Tasting Ticket', which clocks in at £20 and includes the price of admission along with a souvenir glass, programme and three pints' worth of beer.
London Fields Brewery is a short trip for those staying in central London hotels. Guests should head towards the Helmsley Place tube stop.
