A new version of the famous Hollywood blockbuster The Bodyguard will open on London’s West End this November.
The stage version of the 1992 movie will feature Tony and Grammy award-winner Heather Headley at will be performed at London’s Adelphi theatre.
Headley will play singer Rachel Marron – the part originally played by Whitney Houston – and will follow the same plot of a relationship between a singer and her bodyguard, a former secret service agent.
The musical is expected to contain a number of Houston’s hits including I Will Always Love You, I’m Your Baby Tonight, Run to You, I Have Nothing, How Will I Know, I Wanna Dance With Somebody as well as other classics performed by the singer, who died recently in Los Angeles.
Playwright Alex Dinelaris has been involved with the movie adaption and Thea Sharrock, who has recently won an Oliver award, will direct the show.
Headley recently told the BBC that she was worried about the audience expecting her to replicate Houston’s performance.
“You don’t want people to compare you to Whitney. I didn’t want it before and especially not now after her passing,” explained the star, who is making her West End debut.
She added: “I want people to come in and say this is Heather’s version – this is Heather playing Rachel Marron and singing Whitney songs.
“I am always trying to find a way to make them my own but still acknowledge and keep the integrity of her music.”
Previews of the new musical will begin on November 6th until December 4th and the show is expected to run until at least April 2013. Tickets are available now to those planning visits to montcalm hotel marble arch and start from £19 each.
