When it comes to iconic rivers, the Thames has got to be up there with the most famous in the world, with both of its banks being flanked by London's most recognisable buildings. Exploring the celebrated waterway as it meanders through the centre of the capital is always a great way to see the sights of the city, although if you happen to be in town in September then you'll have the chance to see the river really come to life.
That's because the Totally Thames Festival will once again be taking place in the heart of London for the duration of the month, with a fantastic range of events set to be held that really put the river to good use and emphasise its importance to the city.
Among the highlights will be annual Great River Race, which sees more than 300 crews from around the world travel to London to take part in this unique and truly thrilling event. Boats of all shapes, sizes, styles and colours will be competing in the so-called London River Marathon, so you can be sure it's going to be quite a spectacle.
Totally Thames also includes the Mayor's Thames Festival, which consists of a programme of arty activities and other goings-on. Along the length of the river, you'll find things like art installations, film screenings, theatre performances and much, much more, with a great deal of the fun taking place on the South Bank.
At Hampton Court Palace, meanwhile, you'll be able to enjoy a night of spectacular fireworks on September 14th, with a 30-piece orchestra playing music by Handel to help set the tone beneath the brightly-lit night sky.
Both sides of the river are lined with some of London's finest hotels, restaurants and other facilities, so you won't have to stray too far from the action when you feel like taking a breather.
