Design museum presents digital crystal exhibition

5th September 2012

London's Design Museum has launched a new exhibition that looks at the creative use of crystal to explore the concept of digital art and memory.

In collaboration with Swarovski, the show is on until January 13th and includes work from a number of different designers - both established and emerging talents.

Visitors staying at central London hotels can also become directly involved in the special exhibition by tweeting using #digitalcrystal and possibly have their own message appear via 1,000 LEDs within Ron Arad's Lolita crystal chandelier.

Nadja Swarovski, the creative director of the German company, said: "It is an honour that the Design Museum has chosen to collaborate with Swarovski on this forward-thinking exhibition. To work with such creative minds and to see how they have responded to the brief is fascinating and offers new insights into our changing relationship with memory and technology.

"Swarovski's passionate commitment to cutting-edge contemporary design and innovation is driven by our work with these visionaries who push the boundaries of how crystal can be used as a creative ingredient."

Highlights include a piece created by 2012 Royal College of Art graduate Anton Alvarez. The special Thread Mapping Machine spins delicate Swarovski yarn embedded with numerous crystals around various objects as a way of preserving them.

Entry to the museum costs £8 for adults and those aged under 12 go free and it is a short walk from London Bridge Overground and London Underground stations.

The Design Museum is also currently hosting a number of exhibitions including one examining the use of technology in sport. Designed to Win has a number of exciting exhibits such as a complete F1 car from the Williams Grand Prix team and high-tech carbon fibre bikes used by Team GB's cycling squad.
