A Doll's House to open on the West End next month

2nd July 2013

After selling out twice at the South Bank's Young Vic theatre, a critically acclaimed production of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House is about to transfer to the West End.

Adapted by playwright Simon Stephens and directed by Carrie Cracknell, the play opens at the Duke of York's Theatre on August 8th and will run for just 12 weeks - so would-be attendees have a slim window in which to catch a performance.

First performed in 1897, A Doll's House is a seminal piece of turn-of-the-century European theatre and helped establish Ibsen as one of the fathers of modernism on the stage. The play challenged accepted 19th century notions of marriage and gender roles, scandalising genteel society of the period but ultimately influencing a whole new generation of writers and thinkers.

It tells the story of Nora Helmer, a housewife whose relationship with her husband Torvald breaks down over the course of one tumultuous Christmas. Beneath a facade of domestic happiness, a complex narrative of fraud, deception and social subterfuge develops - all building inexorably towards a shocking finale.

The upcoming West End production stars Hattie Morahan, an award-winning alumnus of the Royal Shakespeare Company with no shortage of BBC credits under her belt, as Nora - the "performance of a lifetime", according to the Sunday Telegraph. Dominic Rowan, fresh from appearances in Law & Order: UK, capably fills the role of Torvald.

"If you only see one production of this play, see this one," the Telegraph's review concluded.

Fans of drama staying at hotel accommodation in London this summer are urged to book their seats as soon as possible. A limited allocation of 29,000 tickets will be sold by the Young Vic at reduced prices, but only up until opening night - so those who act quickly can attend for as little as £10.

The Duke of York's Theatre is located on St Martin's Lane. Those travelling via the London Underground should head towards the Leicester Square or Charing Cross tube stops.
