Amazon exhibit comes to Somerset House

2nd November 2011

Culture vultures staying in luxury London hotels may be interested in attending the Amazon photography exhibition at Somerset House.

Opening today (November 2nd), the display shows off the utopian-like images of rainforest splendour untouched by man and juxtaposes this with images of deforestation and logging.

Running until December 4th, the exhibition takes place in the East Wing Galleries and charges nothing for admission.

The display is in aid of Sky Rainforest Rescue and features the photography of Sebastiao Salgado and Per Anders Pettersson.

"I relished the opportunity to present some of my unseen images in the exhibition and highlight the beauty that must be preserved," commented Mr Salgado.

His previously unseen work comes from his ongoing photographic essay Genesis, which portrays landscapes in their most pristine state and the indigenous communities still living in them.

Mr Pettersson presents a contrasting view, presenting photographs from his recent visit to Acre state, north-west Brazil with actress Gemma Arterton, which present the "stark reality" and the level of devastation caused by deforestation.

"The images that we captured were beautiful and heart breaking in equal measure," the photographer explained.

Somerset House promises that a programme of talks and events will accompany the exhibition, which are set to be announced in the near future.

The Sky Rainforest Rescue group represents the combined efforts of the WWF and Sky, with the aim of saving one billion trees in the Amazon from logging.

In October, the group offered budding photographers the chance to have their work shown alongside that of the professionals at the Somerset House exhibition.

Shutter-bugs have been asked to go out into their local environment with their digital cameras or camera phones and try to capture their personal take on the theme of "Your Own Amazon".
