Andy Flower to run London Marathon

22nd March 2012

Part of the fun of booking hotel accommodation in London and coming down to the capital to watch the annual London Marathon is spotting the numerous celebrities as they huff and puff their way around the route in the name of a good cause.

And fans of cricket will no doubt enjoy the sight of England cricket coach Andy Flower tackle this year's marathon, as he attempts to raise money for the Lord's Taverners.

The Zimbabwean has a reputation as a tough competitor, having led England to two Ashes victories and helped them become the world's top ranked Test team during his three years in charge.

But his resolve will no doubt be put to the test during the 26.2 mile run, which he plans to do in full cricket kit and pads, cricketworld.com reports.

He will be joined on the day by Simon Woodard, a member of the Lord's Taverners - a charity which helps to give young people, particularly those with special needs, a chance to get involved with sports.

Flower will also be raising money for Hope for Children, a charity helping disabled, orphaned, poor and exploited children, and Factor 50, a patient support group for those who suffer from skin cancer.

"These are all fantastic causes and I want to do my bit to help," he said. "I'll be doing as much as I can to get cash from the England players - and I need your support, too."

Those wishing to sponsor his marathon attempt can do so via Flower's Just Giving page at justgiving.com/andy-flower.

Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph's fitness expert Tony Gallagher recently provided some training advice for those planning on running the marathon themselves, stressing the importance of getting your body used to running long distances.

"If you're planning on a marathon, then you must get your long runs in," he said. "If you arrive at the start line and suddenly ask your body to run a third more miles than ever before, you'll struggle."
