Back to the Future musical to open in London

3rd February 2014

London's West End is known across the globe as one of the best places on the planet to watch a play or a musical, and is tied with Broadway in New York for the title of the top area for theatre lovers.

Now it seems that the capital is stealing a march on Manhattan as it prepared to host what many people are calling the most exciting theatrical project ever.

That's because a stage production of Back to the Future is set to open in London next year, with fans of the popular movie franchise practically passing out from excitement and anticipation.

The three movies that make up the Back to the Future series were released in 1985, 1989 and 1990, and starred Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd as they travelled through the ages in what are seen as a trilogy of timeless classics.

Still ranked among the most popular movies ever made, the films are proving that they haven't lost any of their appeal, judging by the excitement that has greeted the announcement of this new project.

Robert Zemeckis, who wrote the films, is participating in the creation of the stage show, as is co-writer Bob Gale, who commented: "The Back to the Future musical is a project that Bob Zemeckis and I have been exploring for almost ten years. We're thrilled to be at last in partnership with a creative and producing team that will create a show that is true to the spirit of the film without being a slavish remake... We can't think of a better way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film."

The show will be directed by Jamie Lloyd, whose portfolio of West End productions includes the likes of Urinetown and The Commitments. Speaking about what audiences can expect from his latest project, Lloyd said: "The production will include illusions, skateboarding and many other surprises that will capture the spirit of the film but freshly interpret it for a new audience."
