Brits show record form

26th June 2012

The weekend has seen a number of British athletes start to come into form just a month before the start of London 2012 - boosting confidence that Team GB could achieve gold medal success.

Long jumper Shara Proctor was hoping to ensure her place on the British team and succeeded in breaking a 29-year-old record.

Proctor jumped a distance of 6.95 metres – two centrimentes better than the 6.93 metres set by Bev Kinch at Helsinki in the first IAAF World Championships in 1983.

The world indoor bronze medallist said: "I'm just on top of the world right now. I got the British record, I'm going to the Olympics - how good can it get?"

There was also a strong performance from Holly Bleasdale in the women's pole vault competition. She managed to clear 4.71 metres and break the British record in the event.

"Today was the first competition I've put a new technique into place, and I felt like I was flying. I feel like I can go much, much higher," said Bleasdale.

Other British athletes in action included major medal hope Jessica Ennis. The heptathlon champion took part in the long jump competition but was disappointed by her performance, especially as she only managed to make one legal jump of 6.37 metres.

"I'm obviously disappointed with the long jump, just because I didn't quite have my rhythm right on the runway and I'm not jumping what I'm capable of," said Ennis.

Meanwhile, the Olympic torch relay is continuing across the UK as it makes its way to London for the opening ceremony on July 27th. It is estimated that around four million people have seen the torch travel the 3,901.57 miles of its 8,000-mile journey so far. The torch will pass through a number of London boroughs as it heads to the Olympic Park and visitors enjoying London hotel deals are encouraged to come out and watch the procession.
