Catch A Bigger Splash at the Tate Modern while you can

19th March 2013

A Bigger Splash - one of the latest exhibitions from the Tate Modern - has been at the gallery since the middle of November, but it is only set to remain in place until April 1st, so people haven't got long to be able to wander round this remarkable display.

Taking its cue and title from the iconic David Hockney painting of a dynamic splash emanating from a swimming pool, the exhibition takes a reverse-engineered look at the dynamic relationship between performance and painting from the 1950s to the present day.

The exhibition will also show how artists experimented with painting as a transitory form using drag or camouflage, often treating make-up as the equivalent of fine art. These explorations include videos such as Bruce Nauman's Art Make-Up 1971 and photographs from the likes of Cindy Sherman and films by Jack Smith.

A Bigger Splash explores how artists have played with the idea of the stage set. Indeed, it showcases a number of larger scale installations such as Karen Kilimnik's dream-like Swan Lake from 1992 and Marc Camille Chaimowicz's brilliant Jean Cocteau.

Time Out London gave the exhibition a four-star review, stating: "Following the rise of performance art in the latter half of the twentieth century, paint was no longer simply a medium applied to a fixed canvas.

"Hockney's languorous image of an LA poolside is a perfect illustration of movement, capturing the forceful displacement of water caused by an unseen diver."

People will be able to look around the exhibition from as little as £10 or £11, with concessions allowed entrance for £8.50 or £9.50.

The Tate Modern is centrally located within the city, so anyone staying in luxury suites in London should find it fairly easy to get to the venue.
