Charles Dickens exhibition comes to London

21st September 2011

There is arguably no exhibition more apt for tourists staying at top hotels in London this winter than the new tribute to Charles Dickens - one of the city's most celebrated and beloved writers.

Dickens and London comes to the Museum of London on December 9th for an extensive run that will last until June 10th 2012.

The exhibition is being launched to mark the 200th anniversary of Dickens' birth next year and will feature an extensive collection of artefacts related to the 19th century English scribe.

Among the invaluable items on show at the exhibition include original and rarely-seen manuscripts of his most famous novels including classics such as David Copperfield and Bleak House.

Dickens' very own writing desk and chair, which will be shown as part of an audio-visual experience, will also be on display alongside a portrait of the writer by William Powell Frith.

Members of the public will also have the chance to see manuscript pages describing the East End opium den that was featured in Dickens' last unfinished novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, excavated items from Jacob's Island, which was depicted by Dickens in Oliver Twist and Luke Fildes' painting Applicants for Admission to a Casual Ward.

An addition to the treasure trove of original items on display, the exhibition will also highlight the social problems of the day, which are well documented in Dickens' fictional works, as well as the innovations of the age, such as the electric telegraph, the penny post, railways and steam boats.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a wide range of Dickens-themed events and activities during the Christmas period, including concert performances by the London Gay Men's Chorus, a Christmas Dickens Grotto and a special Dickens Fact from Fiction event at the Museum of London.
