Clerkenwell Design Week starts tomorrow

20th May 2013

From tomorrow until Thursday (May 21st to May 23rd), Clerkenwell is set to come alive with the exhibitions, workshops, product launches and parties that make up one of the UK's leading independent design festivals.

Clerkenwell Design Week is now in its fourth year and continues to attract an audience of both professionals and members of the public, with all contemporary design enthusiasts welcome. Events take place in an eclectic range of Clerkenwell venues including the Farmiloe Building, a beautiful Victorian former glassworks, and the Order of St John's crypt and priory - striking locations not normally open to the public that make truly stunning backdrops to cutting-edge interior design projects and installations.

Dozens of world-renowned brands will be operating pop-up showrooms throughout the area and a fringe component to the festival will see local art and design organisations open their doors to visitors. For those who find the vast number of attractions on offer a little intimidating, the Clerkenwell Presents series should prove an accessible entry point. These exciting installations are totally unique and instrumental to giving Clerkenwell Design Week a vibrant festival atmosphere.

Projects being exhibited in 2013 include 'The Huts', a huge undertaking by the charity Architecture for Humanity that consists of an entire village designed and built specifically for the event. Each individual hut follows a different theme "reflecting the spirit and ethos" of the organisation. These include the Green Hut, festooned with edible plants, and the Textile Hut, which explores soft materials.

The festival will also host the mobile London Transport Canteen, which will be based in the courtyard of the Farmiloe Building. A collaboration between Transport for London and restaurant chain Canteen, the transportable eatery will serve a selection of classic British meals for hungry festival-goers.

Clerkenwell is a pleasant area in the borough of Islington and should prove easy to reach for Underground travellers staying in central London hotels, being served by the Barbican and Farringdon tube stops.
