Commemorate the First World War in London this year

18th February 2014

As many people are aware, 2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of World War I, and to commemorate what was one of the most historic events of the twentieth century, a range of events are set to take place in London over the course of this year.

Lasting from 1914 to 1918 and commonly referred to as the Great War, the conflict was the first war to have truly global implications, costing millions of lives across the planet and setting the tone for the following several decades.

Anyone who wants to learn more about this historic yet tragic war can do so by the National Portrait Gallery, where an exhibition entitled The Great War in Portraits will be held from February 27th until June 15th. Many of the pieces that are set to go on display were created by those who were involved in the conflict first hand, with paintings and photographs taken by soldiers on the front line, as well as a German film about the Battle of the Somme that has never been seen before.

Elsewhere, the Tate Modern will be hosting a display called Conflict, Time, Photography, with the images on show have been taken not only during the Great War, but several other major military confrontations as well. This will be a free exhibition and will open in November of this year, running until April 2015.

For those who want to gain a greater understanding of the Second World War, meanwhile, a visit to the HMS Belfast - which is docked on the South Bank of the River Thames, between London Bridge and Tower Bridge - is always worthwhile. A vessel of extreme importance and heritage, she was involved in the D-Day Landings that took place in Normandy in 1946, and this May will be hosting an event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the conflict.
