Discover the wonders of the cosmos in Greenwich

15th July 2014

The Royal Observatory in Greenwich is one of the world's most famous centres of astronomy, and also happens to sit right on the Meridian Line, all of which make it a fascinating place to visit throughout the year.

However, from mid-September onwards, those who make the trip to this amazing venue, high on a hill overlooking the entire London skyline, will find something extra special waiting for them.

That's because the Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition will be returning to the famous observatory from September 18th, giving visitors the chance to see the most amazing shots of the heavens taken over the past 12 months.

The exhibit is free to enter, and over the years has become the world's most prestigious astrophotography contest.

As such, it attracts tens of thousands of entries from all around the world, with professional and amateur astronomers alike taking part.

You can therefore be pretty sure that all of the winning entries displayed in the exhibit are going to be truly spectacular, and will reveal some amazing elements of the universe as you've never seen them before.

The exhibition is split into four categories, with the winner and runners-up from each of these being on display. These are Earth and Space, Our Solar System, Deep Space and the Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year.

The competition is now in its sixth year, and will remain open until the start of February 2015, giving astronomy fans plenty of time to see it.

The Royal Observatory is located within walking distance of a number of other hugely popular attractions, including the likes of the National Maritime Museum and the Cutty Sark. The nearest transport link is Greenwich station, which is on the Docklands Light Railway, and is just a short journey away from many of London's best hotels.
