Explore analogue photography this weekend

21st August 2013

Spending a weekend in London is a great opportunity to go snap-happy - following in the footsteps of thousands of tourists and photographing landmarks like the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace.

Come this weekend, though, camera buffs should consider venturing a little further afield from Westminster. Over in Shoreditch, the Old Truman Brewery is about to host The Dark Room - a three-day celebration of analogue photography in London.

Presented by Hush Puppies, the event features an array of attractions sure to seduce anyone who's ever been enticed by the thought of taking to the streets of the capital with a trusty 35 mm camera.

Those who usually use their smartphone or a digital camera to take their holiday snaps are invited to hire this kit, getting a taste of the unique challenges - and boundless pleasures - that come with working on film.

Afterwards, they'll be able to process their images themselves under the supervision of darkroom experts back at the brewery.

"We want to encourage digital users to experience the magical workings of analogue photography - it's a great opportunity to learn a new skill," Hush Puppies explain.

The best images taken over the course of the weekend will be featured in an ever-growing gallery at the Old Truman Brewery. Meanwhile, those who find they've developed a taste for working with 35 mm can pay a visit to the pop-up vintage camera shop on site.

Several workshops are also scheduled to take place. In one particularly unusual session, organisers are inviting participants to get hands-on and build their own fully functional pinhole cameras.

The Dark Room runs between noon and 8pm every day from Friday to Monday (August 23rd - 26th). Those staying at luxury London hotels and travelling via public transport should find the brewery easy to reach - it's a five-minute walk away from the Shoreditch High Street Overground station on the extended East London line.
