Films on the Flytower season starts

14th September 2011

Culture lovers visiting luxury London hotels this month have the opportunity to attend a series of alfresco showings of "extraordinary film treasures" from BFI Southbank.

The short season of films runs until September 24th as part of the National Theatre's Watch This Space festival.

Selected films will be projected at night onto the theatre's flytower which soars above the Thames for unobstructed viewing.

Highlights include early footage of London, clips that provide an insight into British domestic life in the 1920s and 1950s as well as a colourful account of the 1960s.

Themed evenings include Housewives' Choice on September 16th, which explores the life of the British housewife, Brit Chic on the 17th, looking at post-war fashion, Fifties London on the 22nd and Local London on the 23rd, followed by historical footage of Vanished London on the 24th.

"American Express is supporting a season of extraordinary film treasures from the BFI National Archive; see the earliest moving images of London, hilarious footage of quirky British domestic life and groovy shorts from the swinging 1960s," commented the organisers.

Furthermore, visitors to the Watch This Space exhibition during the daytime may be entertained by a variety of performers closing up the season of events.

Ian Marchant, the Hat Juggler, will be on hand with a gravity defying display of juggling and plate spinning.

A trio of hula-hoopers, Hoop La La, demonstrate "clever and highly skilled" ways of using hoops in a variety of scenarios.

Comedy lovers might also want to catch the performance by Strictly Dumb Prancing.

"With more than a smidgen of mischief, this over-sequinned couple combine superbly skilled acrobalance and dubious tango dancing with a generous helping of comedy," comments the National Theatre.
