Froch v Groves II set to take place at Wembley

6th March 2014

Wembley stadium is known throughout the world as one of the greatest sporting venues on the planet, although it's been almost 20 years since it last hosted a boxing match.

The long wait is now about to end, however, with what is being billed as the biggest British fight in history set to take place at Wembley this summer.

Carl Froch and George Groves, who previously fought in Manchester in November - with defending champion Froch's WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles on the line - will now lock horns again in the capital after a review into the controversial end to their first fight concluded that it shouldn't have been stopped.

Indeed, with challenger Groves leading on all three judges' scorecards - and having already floored Froch - heading into the ninth round, the referee stepped in to hand victory to the defending champion, despite protests from Groves's camp that he was OK to continue.

There have been calls for a rematch ever since, and while many people initially expected this second bout to be held at a smaller venue in Froch's native Nottingham, promoters managed to pull out all the stops and get the fight staged at Wembley - which is just 15 minutes from the Montcalm Hotel on the Jubliee Line.

Taking place on May 31st, Froch v Groves II is already one of the most talked-about fights ever to take place on British shores, and fans of the sport will be able to benefit from tickets that are much cheaper than is often the case for boxing matches.

Indeed, most major fights tend to take place in indoor arenas or casinos - such as the MGM Grand in Las Vegas - where the capacity is relatively small and high demand for tickets drives prices up into the thousands of pounds.

However, with Wembley able to hold 90,000 spectators, tickets for this fight are set to be much more affordable and readily available than would have been the case if the bout had been hosted elsewhere.
