GB basketball Olympic squad unveiled
The names of the 20 members of the Great Britain women's preliminary basketball squad for the London 2012 Olympics have been revealed.
Coach Tom Macher confirmed that the team will include four previously uncapped players and will focus on youth rather than experienced players. New members to the squad include 18-year-old Bonnie Samuelson, 19-year-old Temi Fagbenle, who is recovering from a knee injury as well as first-timers Dominique Allen and Kristina Collins.
"I am very pleased and excited with the squad we have coming into camp this year," coach Maher explained.
He added: "There is a lot of young talent who are the next generation of basketball players in Great Britain and they will learn a lot from some of the more experienced members of the squad."
The final squad of 12 players will be named on June 22nd following two key games in Edinburgh at the start of the month.
Visitors staying at London luxury hotels and planning to attend the basketball games will need to head to the north of the Olympic Park to see the fast-paced action. The special construction area, which is the size of two football pitches and around 34 metres high, is one of the largest-ever temporary venues built in Olympic history.
Work began on the site in October 2009 and was fully completed by June last year within budget. One crucial requirement for the venue was for all of the doors to be at least 2.4 metres in height to ensure that even the tallest basketball athlete could fit comfortably into the arena. As well as hosting all of the basketball matches, the venue will also be used for the handball events before being adapted ahead of the Paralympic Games for the wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball competitions.
