Jessie J to turn on Oxford Street Christmas lights

5th November 2013

The switching on of the Christmas lights in London's West End is always one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year, and signals the beginning of the festive period in earnest.

As such, speculation is always rife as to who will be given the honour of pressing the button, with many famous celebrities such as Robbie Williams and the Spice Girls having performed the task in the past.

This year, the duty falls to none other than British pop singer Jessie J, famous for songs like Price Tag and Do It Like a Dude.

Having previously set the world alight with a stunning performance at the London 2012 Olympic Games closing ceremony, as well as appearing as a judge on the popular TV show The Voice, the singer will provide the grand finale to a ceremony hosted by Selfridge's on November 12th by flicking the switch and lighting up the world's most famous shopping street.

What's more, the lighting display all along Oxford Street has been reinvented this year for the first time in half a decade, with the new design mimicking the effect of falling snow and stretching for a full mile.

Some three-quarters of a million LED lights will be utilised to create the display, while almost 2,000 baubles will also be included as the West End's busiest road gets its annual festive makeover.

Regardless of whether or not you can make it for the big switch on next week, a visit to Oxford Street at any point over the Christmas period will enable you to enjoy the dazzling light display, which will remain in place until the new year.

Many of the shops on Oxford Street will also be putting up their own Christmas decorations in the coming days and weeks, with Selfridges and the Disney Store being among the best places to go for a dose of festive cheer.
