Last chance to celebrate London Transport Museum's 150th anniversary

19th December 2013

Among the many icons by which London is identified is the tube, with the city being home to the world's oldest and most extensive underground rail network. Having first opened way back in 1863, the London Underground has been celebrating its 150th anniversary throughout 2013 with a range of fantastic events .

With just a few weeks to go before the year comes to an end, now is your last chance to take part in the anniversary celebrations, and a great way to do this is by taking a trip to the London Transport Museum.

Located in Covent Garden, the museum can easily be visited as part of a sightseeing day around central London, and with plenty of excellent exhibits currently on show, it's well worth stopping by.

Among these is a special display entitles Poster Art 150, which showcases some of the most iconic posters that have been used to promote the tube over the past century and a half.

In that time, Transport for London has commissioned some of the best artists in Britain to create posters for the tube, with works by the likes of surrealist photographer Man Ray among those on show as part of the exhibit.

The posters in the display have been chosen from the museum's archive of more than 3,300, with an expert panel of judges selecting the best ones. Other artists whose work is currently on display at the museum include Edward McKnight Kauffer and Paul Nash.

On top of this, visitors to the London Transport Museum can also enjoy a range of family activities, which will be running throughout the Christmas holidays. On offer at the Family Station area of the museum will be materials to make your own poster, as well as create your own London bus using stencils and other arts and crafts tools.

These activities will be running until January 2nd, so if you want to take part in the Tube's birthday celebrations then now is the time to do so.
