London 2012 wins sustainability praise

1st May 2012

The Olympic Park has been praised by the United Nations (UN) for its commitment to being sustainable.

The UN under-secretary general Achim Steiner visited the main Olympic venue as part of the launch of the London 2012 pre-Games sustainability report.

It is hoped that this summer's games will be the most sustainable in Olympic history as well as helping to regenerate the east London area of the capital city.

In order to achieve sustainability, there are a number of initiatives being adopted by organisers in the run-up to and during the Games.

These include a commitment to produce zero waste during the sporting event. There is also the Active Travel Programme, which is focused on encouraging more people to walk or cycle during the Games. In addition, all caterers involved in London 2012 have signed up to ensuring all the food served meets Food Vision standards.

Mr Steiner said: "I witnessed the thoughtful approach to bringing sustainability issues into the planning and development of a mass scale event.

"Efforts such as the greening of the supply chain, regeneration of an inner city area and bringing energy efficiency measures to local homes can build the confidence to wider society that sustainability is not theory but infinitely do-able with the policies and technologies available today not tomorrow."

David Stubbs, London 2012 organising committee head of sustainability, added that organisers had faced a number of challenges in trying to ensure sustainability, especially in areas that had not been tackled in previous Games.

The opening ceremony of London 2012 will be held on July 27th and many of those with tickets will be taking advantage of special Olympic London hotel packages.
