London set to host 'outstanding' Olympics

3rd April 2012

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that the UK capital city is on course to present an "outstanding" Summer Games in just a few months.

IOC official Denis Oswald told the world's press that all of London's venues for the 2012 Games have now been constructed and that only minor refinements and finishing touches remain to be completed before the much-anticipated opening ceremony on July 27th.

Mr Oswald, speaking at the final IOC co-ordination commission visit to London, explained: "We still have 119 days to go but I can tell you that London is ready to welcome the world."

He also stressed that this summer will be a crucial and unique time for those visiting London and that the seven years of preparation have led to the development of a high level of Olympic "fever" amongst the British public.

"You can really sense the growing excitement for the Games," said the IOC representative.

Sebastian Coe, chair of the London 2012 Olympic Organising Committee, added: "We are obviously delighted with the IOC verdict that we are on track to deliver a great Games and welcome the world in 17 weeks time."

The former middle distance runner also focused on the strong commitment to the Games from within London and across the rest of the UK.

It is expected that demand for central London hotels close to the key Olympic stadiums will be high as visitors from the UK and overseas descend on the capital this summer.

The ultimate sporting event will take place from July 27th to August 12th and will feature 26 different sports based at 34 venues across London.

Olympic officials have also confirmed that the Olympic opening ceremony, which is being directed by leading filmmaker Danny Boyle, will finish before midnight so that athletes taking part in events the next day will be able to still get a good night's sleep.
