London Spanish Film Festival starts this weekend

26th September 2013

Over the past few decades, Spanish cinema has gathered a global following and a reputation for being among the most creative and innovative forces in the film world.

Directors such as Pedro Almodover and stars like Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Javier Bardem may have made it big in Hollywood, yet they also keep returning to their native country to take part in Spanish project - indicating just how exciting the Iberian country's film-making process is.

Anyone who wants to see the very latest movies to emerge from the region as well as some classics can do so by attending one or more screenings at the London Spanish Film Festival, which will be running from September 27th to October 9th.

Taking place the Cine Lumiere in South Kensington, a number of highly acclaimed movies will be shown, many of which will be given their UK premieres at the festival, and several other events such as question and answer sessions with directors and producers will also be on offer.

Among the films set to feature in the ninth London Spanish Film Festival is a groundbreaking documentary which aims to bring to the attention of the world the situation faced by Sahwri refugees living in camps in Western Sahara.

The film follows a group of activists including Javier Bardem and his actor brother Carlos, as well as popular musician Manu Chao, as they put their case forward to the UN for more action to be taken to help improve the human rights situation in the region.

Special guest at this year's festival will be Catalan actor, writer, director and artist Jordi Molla, who has stared in a huge number of films both in Spain and in Hollywood. As well as screening a number of Molla's movies, the festival will also include an on-stage interview with the man himself.
