Marriage of Figaro comes to Royal Opera House

23rd December 2011

Theatre lovers taking advantage of London hotel deals early next year may be interested in the upcoming performance of Le Nozze di Figaro from February 11th to March 2nd 2012.

The show represented the final part of the Mozart-Da Ponte series at the Royal Opera House, with David McVicar's 2006 production of the comedy.

"Mozart's great score has a wealth of famous numbers and gives the chance for especially fine singing," commented the venue.

Ideal for those staying at boutique hotels in London, the play features the talents of acclaimed singers, such as Ildebrando D'arcangelo as the quick-witted manservant and Simon Keenlyside his master.

The entire show is under the supervision of Antonio Pappano, music director of The Royal Opera.

Set in revolutionary 17th century Europe, Le Nozze di Fiago (The Marriage of Figaro) centres around Figaro's attempts to protect his fiance from Count Almaviva.

While this serves as the catalyst of the story, the play soon explores the class tensions throughout the entire estate.

"The setting of David McVicar's production in 1830 - with sumptuous and realistic designs - provides the perfect backdrop for the unresolved tensions between the classes of Revolutionary Europe," added the group.

Audience members can expect the play to run for over three hours, with the performances sung in Italian and featuring English subtitles.

The Royal Opera House recently announced that it will be hosting The Royal Ballet's performance of Romeo and Juliet.

Choreographed by Aletta Collins, the play will see its opening night on January 10th and will close on March 31st.

"The timeless story, best known from Shakespeare, matched to the fine score by Prokofiev provided the starting point for what has become a 20th-century ballet classic: an international calling card for the choreographer and a signature work of The Royal Ballet," remarked the group.
