New musicals arriving in the West End in 2014
As one of the world's top cities for arts and entertainment, it should come as little surprise to hear that a number of fantastic new musicals are set to open in London in 2014, so if you've never spent an evening at a West End theatre then there really has never been a better time to do so.
While many of the long-running favourites like We Will Rock You, Les Miserables and Disney's The Lion King will all still be showing in Theatreland throughout the year, the chance to see some brand new productions is something that will surely excite all fans of musical drama.
Among the shows set to open in the coming 12 months is Jerry Mitchell's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, with the director of Hairspray and Legally Blonde displaying his talent once more in this highly-anticipated comedy.
Based on the classic movie starring Michael Caine, the show – which opens in March at the Savoy Theatre – tells the story of a pair of con-artists as they attempt to have their way with a rich heiress in the south of France.
The musical stars Olivier and Tony Award winner Robert Lindsey - who audiences may recognise from his successful television career – alongside Rufus Hound, whose previous works include the wildly successful One Man, Two Guvnors.
Elsewhere in the West End, Olivier Award winner Jenna Russell will be starring in the London production of the hit US musical Urinetown, which has three Tony Awards to its name and opens at the St James Theatre in February.
Set in a futuristic city in which those who abuse public toilets are sent to Urinetown, the show features an all-star cast that also includes Richard Fleeshman, who previously appeared in Ghost the Musical.
Several more musicals will be opening in London throughout the year, and if you fancy starring in one yourself then you may be interested to hear that auditions for Billy Elliot are set to be held throughout 2014, as the production crew looks for new cast members.
