Not long left to see To Kill a Mockingbird at Regent's Park

29th May 2013

Spending a few days at a hotel in London is always an excellent opportunity to enjoy the dramatic arts, with the city being home to no end of world-class theatres. Now that Britain is blessed with sunnier weather, it's even possible to migrate from darkened West End venues to enjoy a play or two in the open air.

The summer season at the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre has already begun with To Kill a Mockingbird, a production adapted from Harper Lee's Pulitzer-prize winning classic by Christopher Sergel. The play launched in mid-May and will run until June 15th, so audiences have just a couple of weeks left to enjoy a landmark stage version of this major 20th century novel.

Set in America's deep south at a time of racial segregation and injustice, To Kill a Mockingbird tells the story of compassionate lawyer Atticus Finch - played here by Robert Sean Leonard, best known for his appearances in US medical drama House. Told through the eyes of Finch's daughter Scout, the production has won praise for its sensitive and profound evocation of childhood.

"If any performances of this heart-shakingly sincere production are rained off, it will be bitterly undeserved," the Times claimed.

Performances take place at 7:45pm, with Saturday matinee showings at 2:15pm. Tickets start at £25.

The Regent's Park Open Air Theatre boasts one of the city's largest outdoor auditoriums, holding as many as 1,240 guests on a busy night. To Kill a Mockingbird represents the start of an ambitious, star-studded programme for summer 2013, being followed in June by productions of Pride and Prejudice and The Winter's Tale. In July, theatre-goers will be treated to much-loved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music.

Those staying in the city centre should find Regent's Park easy to reach. The park is served by the Baker Street Underground station, which is just a ten-minute walk away.
