Queen reopens Cutty Sark ahead of Jubilee

26th April 2012

The Queen has been preparing for her Diamond Jubilee weekend by renaming her row barge and re-opening the Cutty Sark.

Alongside the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen formally named her £1 million vessel -Gloriana - that will be used in the forthcoming Diamond Jubilee pageant.

She then visited the site of the Cutty Sark in the centre of Greenwich to open the newly refurbished ship. Costing £50 million, the oldest surviving tea clipper has been raised up using a special glass platform as well as being totally restored.

Visitors to the famous ship will also now be able to enjoy a special gallery, café and entertainment space underneath the vessel so is an ideal attraction for those staying at boutique hotels in London.

Lord Sterling, chairman of Royal Museums Greenwich and the Cutty Sark Trust, said: "Cutty Sark holds a unique place in the heart for the people of Greenwich, Great Britain and indeed the rest of the world, and it is splendid that she is re-joining the London skyline once again."

He added: "Cutty Sark's re-launch comes in an exceptional year for Greenwich, which was granted the status of Royal Borough in February, and will have the eyes of the world upon it during The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer."

The restoration of the Cutty Sark has taken around six years and it is hoped that the refurbishment has halted the deterioration of the ship. In addition, the new visitors' centre means that people can walk underneath the hull and view the unique lines that were responsible for her being capable of travelling from Sydney to London in 1869 in record-breaking speeds.
