Relive the Little Ice Age in London

27th January 2014

The mercury may be dropping but before you let it get you down, remember that the winter temperature in London is positively balmy compared to the sorts of conditions locals had to put up with in times gone by.

Known as the Little Ice Age, the period between the 15th and 19th centuries was characterised by its extreme winters, with the British capital experiencing temperatures that most of us 21st-centuryites would more commonly associate with Scandinavia.

In fact, things got so cold that the Thames regularly froze over for several months of the year, giving Londoners the chance to skate on the surface.

If you'd like to relive this incredible phenomenon then you may be interested to hear that a Frost Fair will be taking place in the capital on February 3rd, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the last genuine Frost Fair to be held on the Thames itself.

Recreating the fun and games that locals enjoyed during the Little Ice Age, visitors will be able to take part in a range of terrific activities, including ice skating and much more.

There will also be a market selling a range of food and drink to warm you up, as well as all sorts of artisan goods.

The event is set to be held at Broadgate in the City of London, and is sure to provide an exciting day out for anyone who happens to be visiting the capital on the day.

Taking you back to Victorian London, it's also a wonderful way to experience a fascinating aspect of the city's history, providing a chance to see what life was like back in 1814.

So, next time you find yourself complaining about the wintry weather in London, just remember that things were once much, much worse - and that was in the days before central heating!
