Richard Alston Dance Company perform at Sadler's Wells

6th February 2012

Dance lovers staying at luxury hotels in London this month will be pleased to learn that the Richard Alston Dance Company will be performing at Sadler's Wells in February.

The dance troupe will be staging an exciting programme of performances at the central London theatre venue from Wednesday February 29th to Thursday March 1st, with performances taking place at 19:30 GMT from Wednesdays to Thursdays and at 13:30 GMT on Thursday.

Audiences will have the chance to experience Richard Alston's iconic signature piece Roughcut, which will be performed to Steve Reich's scintillating New York Counterpoint and Electric Counterpoint, played live by clarinettist Roger Heaton and guitarist James Woodrow.

First performed in 1990, Roughcut has been termed a British dance classic and features a vibrant display of energy and technique.

Audiences will also have the chance to experience Ned Rorem's String Quartet Number Four in the performance of Lie of the Land, which features lyrical dancing and expressive performances.

According to The Times newspaper, In the Lie of the Land is Martin Lawrence's most impressive dance to date. The piece received its premiere in 2010 and features strong and expressive sentiments.

The triple bill is completed by A Ceremony of Carols, which is Alston's most recent piece. The dance is choreographed to Benjamin Britten's masterpiece for boys' voices and the harp, and is sung and played live by the Canterbury Cathedral Choir. The piece is conducted by David Flood, with harp accompaniment by Camilla Pay.

Tickets to the performance are priced at between £12 and £32.

Richard Alston is commonly hailed as one of the most talented musical choreographers in the UK. He used a wide range of musical composers in his dances, as music plays a vital part of his work.

Alston was recently nominated for a prestigious National Dance Award for Outstanding Company.
