Rossini's masterpiece The Barber of Seville heading to London

21st February 2013

Two centuries after its initial premiere, Rossini's masterpiece The Barber of Seville is coming to the London Coliseum for a short three-week run.

Universally accepted as the composer's defining comic piece, the prequel to The Marriage of Figaro remains as tuneful, ironic and hilarious as ever - and people will have the chance to catch it on the West End from later this month.

Set in an elegant comic-opera vision of what 18th century Seville was like, Jonathan Miller's Tiepolo-inspired staging intercuts the traditions of the Italian commedia dell-arte and the Whitehall farce.

This creates a truly unique show that, at its last revival, led to one reviewer calling it "an evening of unalloyed pleasure, insight and subtlety of characterisation".

The show will be performed in the grand surroundings of the London Coliseum from February 25th to March 17th, so people only have a small window to see it as part of a weekend spent in one of the many top hotels in London.

Flautist-turned-conductor Jaime Martin will be making his operatic debut - and he is sure to bring an authentic Hispanic approach to the latest revival.

Star of the English National Opera's 2011-12 season Benedict Nelson will be part of a hugely talented ensemble that will also include Billy Budd as Figaro, Lucy Crowe as Rosina and Olivier Award-nominated buffo baritone Andrew Shore as Doctor Bartolo.

Visitors to the city will be able to get their hands on tickets for one of the performances from as little as £25 for seats on the Balcony, while entry to the stalls will set people back £99.

The London Coliseum is situated in St Martin's Lane, which is close by to the Leicester Square Tube stop and this has the Northern and Piccadilly lines running through it, meaning a trip from a hotel to the venue shouldn't prove too difficult.
