Royal Ballet serving up a Christmas treat

13th December 2011

The Royal Ballet is conjuring up the spirit of Christmas with its version of classic seasonal production The Nutcracker during a December run.

The show is based in the heart of London at the Royal Opera House, in classy Covent Garden, just a short tube ride from the hotels in Park Lane, which lie adjacent to the glorious Hyde Park.

The Nutcracker is based on E.T.A Hoffman's story of one girl's Christmas Eve night of magical adventure where she experiences such wonders as an incredible growing Christmas tree and the spectacle of seeing toy soldiers who come to life doing battle with the Mouse King and his mouse army.

The original Nutcracker score was penned by legendary composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky and is full of well-known melodies.

The music for this modern rendition is being led by director of music Barry Wordsworth and Dominic Grier, who will be conducting in front of the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

The Evening Standard says Peter Wright's choreography is "always cogent and often elegant" and there really is no better way to complement a Christmas stay in one of the top luxury London hotels than with a trip to the ballet – especially a production like the Nutcracker that is overflowing with festive-themed delights.

The company promises "classical ballet at its most approachable and visually entrancing, with something for everyone to enjoy, from the youngest in the family to the oldest – a Christmas present that brings a special magic each year it returns".

The Nutcracker is showing from now right up until Christmas Eve itself – surely the most appropriate day for this particular production – at a mixture of times both during the week and at weekends.

Before and after the show, ballet-goers can also enjoy the wealth of bars and restaurants in and around Covent Garden.
