Royal Ballet takes on Romeo and Juliet

20th December 2011

Early next year The Royal Ballet is set to take to the stage at the Royal Opera House for a performance of Romeo and Juliet, attracting theatre-lovers to luxury London hotels.

Opening on January 10th and closing March 31st 2012, the show will feature some of The Royal Ballet's best performers, including Carlos Acosta, Tamara Rojo, Mara Galeazzi, Edward Watson, Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg.

"The timeless story, best known from Shakespeare, matched to the fine score by Prokofiev provided the starting point for what has become a 20th-century ballet classic: an international calling card for the choreographer and a signature work of The Royal Ballet," commented the group.

Set to take place over three hours, featuring two intervals, the performance is Kenneth MacMillan's first full-length work for the group.

Visitors to central London hotels before the end of this December can also catch the festive Magical Night at the Royal Opera House.

The family-friendly show tells the tale of children's toys brought to life for one night of magical adventures.

Choreographed by Aletta Collins, who won acclaim for her work on The Red Balloon, the show is scored by Kurt Weill.

"Much of the musical and scenic material was presumed lost during the war, but the discovery of an original set of parts in a Yale University vault in 2005 has led to the creation of a new edition of the piece which will receive its first British performances," explained the venue.

Ticket prices range from £10.50 to £23.50, performances will be staged regularly until December 31st.

La traviata, the story of a self-sacrificing courtesan, is also currently on at the theatre until January 25th.

The show was awarded four stars by the Guardian's critic George Hall, who praised the cast.

"Renee Fleming is in complete command as Verdi's courtesan, facing down the awesome difficulties of her big first act solo scene with assurance and maintaining a strong tone inflected with appropriate colours," explained the paper.
