Sadler's Wells Theatre to host Asian dance season
Dance fans staying in luxury accommodation in London can take in the Out of Asia Season at Sadler's Wells Theatre.
The series of events taking place from September 6th through to November 16th brings together artists from China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Japan and Taiwan.
Many of the shows on offer are UK or world premieres, making it an exciting season of dance in the capital.
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's TeZukA explores the world of Japanese Manga artist Osamu Tezuka, whose creations include Astro Boy.
The artistically inspired project features nine dancers, two musicians, an actor and a calligrapher.
Award-winning composer Nitin Sawhney provides the score, plus the production will feature projections of Tezuka's illustrations.
On September 19th and 20th, Ea Sola: Drought and Rain will explore the effects of the Vietnam war on the country's people.
French-Vietnamese choreographer Ea Sola was born during the height of the conflict, became a refugee and returned home in 1990.
Visitors to the capital can see Akram Khan's Bangladesh-inspired performance, Desh.
The show is the result of collaborations with Oscar-winning artist Tim Yip, designer Michael Hulls, writer Karthika Nair and award-winning composter Jocelyn Pook.
Desh runs from October 4th to 8th, while the 12th sees the Beijing Dance Theatre perform Haze.
The group brings together traditional elements of Chinese culture and dance with ballet.
Popular in its homeland, the company was established by choreographer Wang Yuanyuan and visual artists Han Jiang and Tan Shaoyuan.
Chinese contemporary dance group Cloud Gate Dance will also stage performances over November 9th to 12th.
Its latest work, White, draws on diverse disciplines from chi kung and meditation to ballet and martial arts.
"White is divided into three parts, each presenting a different type of white," explain the organisers. "Light and shadow are used to transform 20 performers into moving silhouettes."
The season of Asian dance ends with TAO Dance Theatre: 2 and Weight x 3, taking place on November 15th and 16th.
TAO Dance Theatre has performed at every modern dance festival in China and have worked with artists across theatre, experimental music and visual arts.
Sadler's Wells Theatre is within walking distance of Angel London Underground station, a short journey from Marble Arch station - the nearest stop to The Montcalm hotel.
