Sadler's Wells to host dance festival

21st February 2014

The Sadler's Wells theatre, which boasts venues in Islington and the West End, has developed a reputation as a major player in the world of contemporary dance and attracts hosts of international artists to London every year.

Over the course of March, this will be underlined by the annual Flamenco Festival, which will offer plenty of Hispanic flair and excitement through its packed programme of events.

Running from March 1st to 15th, the celebration features six shows from some of the biggest names within the flamenco world, including international star Sara Baras - who will be making her first appearance at the festival since 2008.

Baras is a Spanish dancer who has won a host of international awards, performing regularly in Paris and New York while also getting involved in the fashion and television world.

She will take part in a production of La Pepa at Sadler's Wells' Rosemary Avenue theatre, featuring nine dancers and seven musicians as well as a guest spot for Jose Serrano.

The show tells the story of Baras' homeland, Andalucía, and will offer a good overview of the various different styles found within flamenco as a genre. Tickets are available online.

Other potential highlights of the upcoming festival include a gig starring Catalan singer Miguel Poveda, widely considered one of the greatest flamenco vocalists of his generation and wildly popular across Europe.

"For this performance, Poveda is accompanied by the dancer La Lupi, who demonstrates the percussive techniques through her hands, feet, and body in a way that honours tradition while always seeking innovation," said the event's organisers.

The show will take place on March 4th at 19:30 and is expected to run for around an hour and a half; admission is priced between £12 and £40, with a range of seating options available.

After the Flamenco Festival winds down, Sadler's Well still has plenty of major dance events lined up for the rest of the year, including a UK premiere of a new work by the acclaimed Olivier Dubois Company.
