Street Scene returns to the West End

21st July 2011

Droves of opera lovers may soon be looking for luxury hotel rooms in London, as the winner of the 2008 Evening Standard Award for Best Musical returns to the West End.

Following its sell-out run three years ago, Street Scene has returned for 14 performances in the Young Vic theatre.

Audiences will experience 24 hours in the life of a 1940s New York City tenement on a hot summer's day.

The play centres on the Murrant family and in particular the tragic reaction following Frank's discovery of his wife Anna's affair.

Street Scene boasts an 80-strong cast, full choir and orchestra - with a score that features show tunes, operatic arias, jazz and blues.

Adapted by Elmer Rice from his Pulitzer Prize-winning play, lyrics were written by the American poet Langston Huges.

Street Scene opens on September 15th and features the BBC Orchestra until September 20th and Southbank Sinfonia from the 22nd through to October 1st.

The two groups are conducted by Keith Lockhart and Tim Murra respectively.

When last on the stage, the Evening Standard said it is an "extraordinary musical".

The Guardian described Street Scene as: "A show of such passion and power… a show that deserves to be seen."

Ticket prices range from £10 through to £30, with a limited number of discounts available for students, under-25s and over-60s.

Additionally, discounts may be provided for the disabled and unwaged as well as group bookings.

Directing the show is John Fulljames, who saw success with his previous Young Vic production of The Human Comedy.

Telegraph critic Rupert Christiansen praised Fulljames as "a leading young director", saying that he treats every opera in a "fresh way".

The Young Vic sits right next to Southwark London Underground station, which, via Bond Street, is a short Tube ride away from Marble Arch - the local station of the Montcalm Hotel.
