Swan Lake returns to Sadler's Wells

27th November 2013

Since being composed by Tchaikovsky in the nineteenth century, Swan Lake has gone on to become one of the most iconic ballets in history, having been interpreted and reinvented in several forms through the years.

Many people will be familiar with the Darren Aronofsky's Oscar-winning 2010 film Black Swan, which took an innovative and somewhat sinister approach to the productions, while also featuring a stunning performance from Natalie Portman.

However, if you thought that this was the most audacious reinterpretation of the original ever made then you'd be wrong, because Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake has been leaving audiences across the world spellbound since first premiering in London back in 1995.

Among the most notable features of this particular version of the popular ballet is the fact that it includes an all-male cast, adding a new dynamic to the show and making it somewhat more aggressive.

The production has gone on to receive more than 30 international honours, including three Tony Awards, and will be returning to Sadler's Wells in London for a limited time over the Christmas period.

Known as London's premier venue for dance shows, Sadler's Wells has a reputation for hosting some of the most spectacular productions anywhere in the capital, and will be welcoming audiences to this classic ballet from December 4th to January 26th.

Located on Rosebery Avenue, the theatre can be accessed from Angel tube station, and the surrounding area is famous for its fantastic selection of bars, pubs and restaurants, making it the perfect place for an evening out.

For those who aren't aware, Swan Lake tells the story of a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer, with the original ballet having premiered at Moscow's world-famous Bolshoi Theatre in 1877.

Even for those who have seen a performance of this classic ballet, Matthew Bourne's version is sure to throw up a few surprises and offers a brand new take on the story.
