Taylor Wessing photographs to go on show in London

13th September 2013

The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize is among the most prestigious awards for photographers, and visitors to London this autumn and winter will be able to see a selection of specially chosen entries for this year's prize when they go on display at the National Portrait Gallery.

Located in Trafalgar Square, the gallery is close to all central London attractions and is serviced by Charing Cross, Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square tube stations.

Known for hosting award-winning portraits, the famous exhibition centre will become home to this new display in November, with an esteemed panel of judges having chosen 60 entries to feature in the collection.

Among those making the decisions were the gallery's director Sandy Nairne, head of Barbican Art Galleries Kate Bush, and photographer Suki Dhanda.

In addition to choosing which portraits to feature in the exhibition, the judges have also shortlisted four photographs for the main prize itself, with the winner to be announced on November 12th.

Among the portraits up for the award is a striking monochrome image of former UN secretary general Kofi Annan, taken by Tehran-born photographer Anoush Abrar.

Female Jockey Katie Walsh, meanwhile, appears with a mud-spattered face in a picture taken by Spencer Murphy, who came third in last year's competition and has once again been shortlisted for the Taylor Wessing Prize.

A striking image of elderly twin sisters lying on a bed, taken by German paediatric endocrinologist Dorothie Diess, has also been put on the list of four, which is completed by an image taken at the 2013 Kumbh Mela Festival in India by war veteran Giles Price, showing a mother holding a baby.

Anyone staying in central London hotels later this year will find the National Portrait Gallery easy to get to, and with a world-class permanent collection on display it's always worth a visit, whether you plan to catch the Taylor Wessing exhibit or not.
