TV gardener looking forward to Chelsea Flower Show debut

26th March 2012

Those staying in hotel accommodation in London this May won't want to miss out on this year's Chelsea Flower Show, with some of the top landscapers and garden designers from across the world set to create spectacular horticultural displays for the event.

One of those taking part will be TV gardener Joe Swift, who will be making his debut at the long-running flower show.

Swift, a regular presenter and designer on the BBC's Gardeners' World, explained that encouragement from fellow celebrity gardener Alan Titchmarsh and former Chelsea Gold Medal winner Andy Sturgeon had caused him to finally enter the competition himself.

"Titchmarsh has been asking me for years when I was going to do a garden," he told cambridge-news.co.uk.

"Andy Sturgeon, who's a good friend of mine, has given me some good advice about the approach and organising yourself, how to deal with things on site and how to keep focused, because there are a lot of distractions."

Swift's Homebase Teenage Cancer Trust Garden has been a year in the making and is designed to combine natural elements with the constraints of city-living.

"The idea is to connect the city and suburban dweller to those natural materials that might not be so prevalent in the city, where you get a lot of concrete and tarmac and other hard elements," he told the news provider.

"In a city space you want to keep the focus within the garden because you don't have the rolling hills beyond to tie in the extended landscape. It's all about creating key views within a garden, and you can do that in a small garden by placing key sculpture, plants and water here and there.

Plants used in Swift's show garden will include trees such as stemmed Cornus Mas and Prunus 'Amber Beauty' alongside a London plane tree, which have all been selected for their sculptural forms and the interesting colour and texture of their bark, he explained.

The Chelsea Flower Show takes place at the Royal Hospital in Chelsea between May 22nd and 26th.
