Viva Forever! hits the stage at the end of November
Girl power is back in full force later this year as Viva Forever!, a musical based on the songs of the Spice Girls, hits the stage at the Piccadilly Theatre - offering a fabulous night out for anyone staying at hotels in Park Lane.
The show - which is a collaborative work between comedienne Jennifer Saunders and Mamma Mia! Producer Judy Craymer - is named after a song from the girl band's second album, Spiceworld, and it tells the story of a girl named Viva who follows her dreams to reach the status of an overnight celebrity.
The decision to not make the show a tribute to the Spice Girls or a biographical piece was made early on in the writing process. Instead, the script is following a formula similar to the one that made Mama Mia! such a huge success. In essence, it's a story about ordinary people, filled with emotion and plenty of wonderful music.
Audiences will see how Viva's new-found stardom impacts her lifestyle, as well as family relationships and friendships. The musical's website boasts an "exhilarating and irresistibly funny tale of love, loyalty and romance".
Interspersed throughout the performance will be favourite Spice Girls songs like Wannabe, Spice Up Your Life and the eponymous Viva Forever, all of which are sure to have audience members dancing in their seats.
Ginger, Posh, Baby, Scary and Sporty all showed up at the musical's launch back in June - the first time they'd all been together again for four years, reported the Guardian. Geri Haliwell talked about her excitement about the Theatreland production: "Sixteen years ago I couldn't have imagined when we were writing the lyric 'zigazig ah' it would end up in a West End show."
Meanwhile, Jennifer Saunders explained one of her motivations for taking on the project: "I love the Spice Girls so much, my daughters grew up with [them] and we used to go and see them."
Viva Forever! is on at the Piccadilly Theatre, with previews starting on November 27th. It officially opens on December 11th.
