Wimbledon to get new look for the Games

21st May 2012

One of the London 2012 Olympic venues is set to receive an injection of colour for the upcoming Games this summer.

Wimbledon's traditional all-white dress code will be abandoned for the course of the Olympics tennis tournament, with athletes donning outfits in their national colours instead.

''The look will be the look of the games. There will be more colour. It will be a special Wimbledon,'' International Tennis Federation president Francesco Ricci Bitti told The Associated Press. ''The rule for clothing will be the rule for the Olympics, so there will be much more colour in terms of what the players wear, too.

"Some people might not like it, but I think the majority will. It will be memorable."

The All England Club looks set for a busy summer, hosting the Wimbledon Championships from June 25th to July 8th, before the Olympic Games come to London shortly after.

Situated in SW19 and with excellent transport links to the rest of the city, Wimbledon's located means that those staying in central London hotels at any time during the Games will easily be able to reach the famous venue for the sporting events.

Alongside the new dress code, Wimbledon also plans to drop the traditional dark green backdrop around the courts in favour of more colourful backdrops to add an extra burst of Olympic atmosphere.

And it looks as though athletes from across the world will enjoy making a more colourful appearance at Wimbledon.

American tennis player Venus Williams, who currently holds claim to three Olympic gold medals, said that she was looking forward to donning her national colours.

"It's the Olympics and so at that point it won't be Wimbledon, so that's what makes it different," she said. "We'll be wearing team colours. Red, white and blue all the way - and hopefully gold."
