Tips for travelling during London 2012

18th June 2012

BBC Radio 1 has joined forces with Transport for London (TfL) to give advice to those staying in the city during London 2012.

In order to ensure that traffic across the city moves freely as thousands descend on the capital to enjoy the Olympics, the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show producer Aled Haydn Jones is producing a blog to provide travelling tips.

For five weeks, the blog will report on the transport hotspots and give advice on alternative ways to travel or where to stop to enjoy a spot of food or drink to avoid the busiest commuting times.

Jones explained: "London is going to be a very exciting place to be this summer and I can't wait for the Games to start. However, with all the extra people in the capital for the sport and cultural events, Londoners will need to plan ahead and avoid the travel hotspots.

"I hope my suggestions for after-work activities, which will include hidden gems alongside better known attractions, will inspire Londoners to make the most of their summer evenings in the city and avoid those hotspots at the busiest times."

Mark Evers, the director of Games Transport at TfL, added that there will be one million more visitors staying in London, so the transport network is going to get busy but planning ahead should help ease the pressure.

Those lucky enough to be enjoying a stay in central London hotels and to have tickets for the Games, will be able to take advantage of the free Games Travel card.

The card will be valid on public transport in London's travel zones on the day of the ticketed event and can be used on London Underground, London Overground, Docklands Light Railway, buses, trams and National Rail services as well as the special Javelin service between St. Pancras and Stratford International stations.
