Camden Beach open for business

29th July 2013

Those who've decided to spend their summers enjoying romantic London getaways might feel a little put out by the excellent weather we've been having - a trip to the seaside might have been more appropriate.

However, the Roundhouse - a legendary London arts venue - reckons its possible to enjoy the best of both worlds. Accordingly, it's just reopened the Camden Beach.

Organisers claim this temporary attraction represents "a little slice of paradise in the heart of north London". By and large, the public seem to agree - over 40,000 visitors came by last year alone.

As the name suggests, the Camden Beach is an artificial stretch of coastline. It's located on the Roundhouse's sunny roof terrace, high above the hustle and bustle of the busy London streets, and covers an expansive 900 square metres - so there's plenty of space to stretch out and sunbathe without interruption.

The Roundhouse is committed to bringing every aspect of the beach experience to London, so visitors should expect deckchairs, beach huts and end-of-the-pier amusements - not to mention a staggering 150 tonnes of the finest sand.

There are also plenty of tantalising food and drink options. These include Fishy Business, a pop-up seafood eatery from the same team behind the acclaimed Made in Camden restaurant; it promises gastronomic delights like sea bass, mussels and "some of the best fish and chips in town".

Finally, the Camden Beach will present free gigs every Friday evening through August - so it'll also be a great place to catch the hottest new acts from the local music scene.

With a handful of exceptions, the beach will be open every day until August 24th and admission is free. The Roundhouse should prove easy to reach from the city centre; those travelling via the London Underground should head towards either the Camden Town or Chalk Farm tube stops, both of which are on the Northern line.
