London buses to get free wi-fi

14th August 2014

London has always been a world leader when it comes to innovative transport solutions, with the world's very first subterranean railway having been built here. Indeed, it's now more than a century and a half since the London Underground first came into being, although the innovations have by no means stopped coming.

Arguably one of the most iconic symbols of the capital is the double-decker red bus, which serves not only as a fantastic way of getting around the city, but also a major tourist attraction.

Now, the experience of taking a ride on one of these is about to get even more convenient and enjoyable for all passengers, after it was announced that a raft of new improvements are to be trialled, with a view to installing these permanently on all London buses.

Among these is the introduction of free wi-fi, thereby giving passengers the opportunity to log on to the internet using their mobiles, tablets or other devices without having to worry about not having a signal or using up too much of their data allowance.

Currently, the new technology is being tested on two buses - a number 12 which runs between Dulwich and Oxford Circus, and an RV1 operating from Covent Garden to Tower Hill - although it is hoped that free internet will soon become a regular fixture on all London buses.

Other space-age improvements currently in the pipeline include screens displaying how many seats are available on the upper deck, therefore sparing passengers the inconvenience of having to go upstairs, only to find that there is no space.

These monitors will also display a graphic charting the bus's progress along its route, as well as all nearby attractions and transport connections.

There are, of course, many ways to get around in London, and you'll find a number of bus stops and tube stations within walking distance of the Montcalm London Marble Arch.
