London now 'greatest city on the planet'

23rd January 2014

If you're looking for confirmation of London's pedigree as a top tourist destination then you might want to take a look at the recent figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which reveal that the city received more visitors last year than any other destination in the world.

For several years, Paris has the been the world's most visited city, although the tide has now turned, with the British capital having increased its offerings to tourists, and attracting huge numbers of people from all corners of the globe.

Indeed, over the first nine months of 2013 some 12.8 million travellers set foot in London, with 4.9 million arriving between July and September.

This represents a 12 per cent increase on the previous year, something that is even more remarkable considering the Olympic Games took place in the capital in 2012.

However, even without the greatest sporting event in the world, London clearly has loads to offer, as Mayor Boris Johnson is keen to point out.

"With so many fascinating museums, the best theatre scene in the world, more green space than any other European city, numerous top sporting venues, a low crime rate and much else besides, it is no wonder that people from all over the globe are flocking to London," he explained.

On top of this, Mr Johnson has declared London to be "the greatest city on the planet", and with a total of 16.9 million people taking a trip to the capital over the course of 2013, it seems he may well be right.

So, if you're looking for somewhere amazing to go for your next holiday, you may want to take advantage of what's on your doorstep rather than travelling further afield, as you're unlikely to find anywhere that can match London in terms of world-class attractions.
