London train gets Jubilee name

11th May 2012

A train has been renamed in honour of the Queen's 60-year reign.

The c2c train will now be known as the Diamond Jubilee 1952-2012 and will be appropriately decorated with a Union flag and the official Diamond Jubilee emblem on its doors and carriage.

Local Chelsea Pensioner David Donaghey was given the honour of naming the train, which is one of five locomotives that will celebrate the Diamond Jubilee this year. The 86-year-old served in the Royal Army Medical Corps for 22 years and spent a further 12 years volunteering with the Territorial Army before becoming a Chelsea Pensioner in 2010.

Mr Donaghey said: "It was a real privilege to be asked to name this train in honour of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee."

Julian Drury, c2c's managing director, added: "We expect Diamond Jubilee 1952-2012 and the other specially designed Jubilee trains will prove really popular with passengers and help people get in the celebratory mood come the Jubilee weekend."

He also explained that the train will be in service during the London 2012 Olympic Games and the unique exterior design "will really stand out for local passengers and foreign visitors alike".

The train will be in operation on the route from London Fenchurch Street to Basildon, Benfleet and Grays to Shoebury.

Last month, Transport for London recommended that commuters and those enjoying special offers on London hotels during the forthcoming Olympics should plan ahead to make sure their journeys are not subjected to delays.

To help travellers, the organisation has launched a special map designed to alert people about any potential travel hot-spots as the transport network will accommodate up to three million additional journeys during the Games and the Paralympic Games.
