Splash the cash at London's top markets

25th September 2013

London is famous for a number of things, and shopping is certainly one of them, with Oxford Street being among the most iconic commercial streets in the world.

However, if you want to get away from the West End stores and giant shopping centres like Westfield, then you'll be thrilled to hear that the capital also boasts a number of amazing markets selling everything from clothes to souvenirs.

Among the most popular is Camden Market, which is on every day in the famous Camden Stables - once used to house the horses that pulled carts of crates from the canal boats to nearby warehouses.

Having been redeveloped over the past few years, the concourse now includes a fantastic open-air food court selling international cuisine, and is known for its many boutique fashion stands and alternative vibe.

Just across the road from the Stables is Camden Fashion Market, which is home to some of the most unique clothes sellers in London and overlooks the canal.

Elsewhere, Spitalfields is a great place to go if you're looking for jewellery, antiques and interesting items, and really comes alive on weekends when the nearby Brick Lane Market also takes place. This area of East London is known for its amazing street art and installations, and also boasts a huge number of bars and record stores such as Rough Trade.

For something a little more refined, meanwhile, Portobello Market is an excellent place to go on a Saturday, and it's here that you'll find some of the best antiques, furniture and other vintage items. A large proportion of the market is also dedicated to food, with artisan sellers plying hungry shoppers with delicious treats to keep their energy levels up.

Speaking of food, Borough Market near London Bridge is the city's premier culinary street market, and is famous for containing the most interesting and best quality grub anywhere in London.
