Time Out offers tips on what not to do in London

11th August 2014

London is one of the world's most vibrant, exciting and creative cities, with no two visits to the capital are ever being the same, and there's always loads going on to keep people of all ages and interests entertained.

However, if you want to make sure you have the best possible time during your stay then there are certain unspoken rules that you'll need to adhere to, with London having its own code of conduct that locals follow at all times.

To help you from breaking any of these conventions and thereby announcing yourself as a tourist, Time Out has put together a list of things not to do when visiting London.

Top of the list is standing on the left when on an escalator in a tube station. For many Londoners, this really is the ultimate faux pas, as all residents of the city expect everyone to use the right hand side for standing and the left for walking. By standing on the left you're likely to hold up those who want to walk, and could end up causing a bottleneck at the bottom of the escalator.

Staying on the subject of public transport, tourists are advised not to take the tube from Leicester Square to Covent Garden, as the two stops are in fact just a few hundred metres apart, and when you factor in the time it takes to wait for a train and navigate the station and make it to the exit, it works out quicker to just walk.

In fact, it's often more convenient to walk than take the tube when moving between two places in the West End, so if you're planning on staying in the Montcalm London Marble Arch then you might want to bear this in mind.

Other essential pieces of advice on the list include not jumping queues - as this is known to be one of the things that winds Londoners up the most - and not wasting your money on a rickshaw ride.
