What to do with the kids in London during the summer holidays

1st July 2014

With the summer holidays now just a couple of weeks away, parents up and down the country are racking their brains as they try to come up with ways to keep the kids entertained for a full six weeks. If you're struggling for ideas then you really ought to consider spending some time in London, as the city is so full of child-friendly attractions that it pretty much does all the hard work for you.

Aside from general activities like strolling around the South Bank and other major tourist hotspots, watching the street performers and soaking up the atmosphere, there are loads of things to do that will appeal to children of all ages, temperaments and interests.

For instance, if you've got young kids with you then you might want to head to the Discovery Story Centre in Stratford, which is in east London.

Designed to help youngsters learn while having fun at the same time, it's a totally unique place that allows children to play while expanding their minds.

Among the many fantastic events being held there during the summer holidays is an interactive exhibit entitled Top Secret, which allows visitors to learn all about the clandestine world of spies as they make their way around a story trail that's littered with hidden clues and other exciting games, puzzles and activities.

Children under the age of six, meanwhile, will surely enjoy taking part in the Stratford on Sea programme, which will see the Discover Story Centre transformed into a beach where kids can sing along to sea shanties lead by Captain Sam or have a go at making sparkly fish.

Elsewhere, the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood can be found on Cambridge Heath Road and is bursting with hands-on exhibits that kids will love. Activity stations are dotted around the venue, giving youngsters the chance to play as they learn, making this a fantastic place to come during the summer holidays.

Be warned though, that with so much fun to be had your little ones are likely to get pretty tuckered out at the end of each day, so you'll want to make sure you check into one of London's top hotels.
